"Why Do I Need an ECE Account?"
The ECE department has migrated most of its systems to use UW NetID authentication. Having an ECE account is still necessary, though - and this page will explain why!
ECE Computing's staff members occasionally get asked "Do I even need an ECE computing account? I already have a NetID."
While it's true that you use your UW NetID to log into almost all ECE computing resources, it's still necessary that you have an ECE account. Even if you don't use it directly, the existence of your ECE account helps us determine your eligibility to access various ECE services.
The ECE web server asks you to log in using your UW NetID, but your ECE account still needs to exist for your login to succeed. We have many resources that are available only to people with an ECE affiliation - for example, online appointment scheduling with ECE advisors, and our Microsoft-donated software.
ECE's Windows and Linux Lab computers also require you to log in using your UW credentials. Some faculty research lab computers still use the ECE password, though (if you aren't sure, just ask).
