UW Team Wins Honorable Mention in Hydrogen Power Contest

EE Students Liyang Chen, Justin Reed and faculty advisor Dr. Kai Strunz were invited to receive the honorable mention award in the 2005 Hydrogen Systems Design Contest sponsored by the National Hydrogen Association (NHA), ChevronTexaco, and the Department of Energy at the annual conference of the NHA in Washington DC. Additional members of the UW team were students Timothy Chao (Bio Engineering), Jenny Lu (Business), Greg Martin (Art), Clint Nelson (Civil Engineering), Brandon Renfrow (Computer Science and Engineering), and Alex Zheng (Computer Science and Engineering). The UW team was recognized "for the brilliant innovation, technical aptitude and superior originality in the design of a next-generation hydrogen power park". Other winners were Humboldt State University, University of Toronto, University of Waterloo, and Cornell University. The UW design was distinguished by the efficient urban integration of sustainable-energy-based hydrogen generation and delivery. The reviews praise a "great approach to bring hydrogen to a large congregation of high income level customers in an area where green thinking is welcome and supported by the community."
