Greetings: First, one thing I missed in last week's highlights: 1. Over March 3-4, Prof. Radha Poovendran and our Department of Electrical Engineering hosted an Army Research Office (ARO) Workshop on Information Assurance for Mobile Wireless Networks. This was a collaborative workshop between ARO, the Department of Electrical Engineering, and the new UW Information Assurance Center. It was attended by about 20-25 of the leading experts in this new field. THANKS Radha, for leading this effort and organization! Now, on to what has been happening this week: 2. On last Thursday, March 11, our Distinguished Lecturer for our EE Department Colloquium was Prof. Ken Wise from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Prof. Wise gave a great talk titled "Wireless Integrated MicroSystems (WIMS): Coming Revolution in the Gathering of Information." Click here to view on-demand video playback of this talk. If you are interested in the long range future of miniature biological interfaces and sensor systems, this is a good talk to listen to! 3. You may have caught the Daily's March 10 article on "Few Female Faculty in Sciences," in which they cited some incorrect figures about Electrical Engineering and the College of Engineering. Prof. Eve Riskin submitted a letter to the editor to correct this, but I thought I would let you know the correct figures here as well. Eve states our statistics correctly in her letter to the editor as: "Second, the figures on women faculty here at the University of Washington (UW) were grossly incorrect. The UW Department of Electrical Engineering is very proud to have nine tenured and tenure-track women faculty (8.33 FTEs), not four as was quoted. In fact, the percentage of women faculty is about 20%, which is over three times the national average of 6.5% women faculty in the top fifty Electrical Engineering departments in the U.S., that Dr. Nelson quotes in her study. The UW Department of Mechanical Engineering has two tenured and tenure-track women, not zero as stated in the article, and the UW Department of Computer Science and Engineering only has three tenured women faculty (2.67 FTEs), not four as listed. The UW Astronomy Department has three tenured and tenure-track women faculty (2.5 FTEs), not six." While we are still not up to a level of 50% female faculty or students, we are WAY ahead of other Electrical Engineering departments around the country, and all of us are very proud of that fact. 4. If you were here late on Friday, March 12, you might have noticed that our main office "garage door" has broken again. This time it is not as dramatic and simply does not close all the way, but please keep some clearance around it while we get it repaired. Thanks! 5.
