Myers and Gebhart Win Gates Leadership Scholarships

Congratulations to Gennie Gebhart and Kelly Myers who have recently been awarded the 2011 Mary Gates Leadership Scholarship. Other EE undergraduates or students mentored by EE faculty who have previously received Gates Scholarship Awards include Bryan Boyko, Ryan Charrier, Joy Kim, Elliot Saba, and Gen Vigil.

Sophomore Gennie Gebhart has been awarded a very competitive 2011 Mary Gates Leadership Scholarship. This for her work with the Husky Cycling Club Women's Team Development. The Husky Cycling Club is the official cycling team of the University of Washington and were 2010 Northwest Collegiate Cycling Conference Champions. Gebhart is studying within the UW Honors Program, the Jackson School of International Studies, and the Economics Department. She will be the future of UW Husky Cycling, quietly motivating all team members to do their best and continuing the expansion of the role of women during both the training and race season. Her Gates Award Mentor is Electrical Engineering Professor Les Atlas, a former collegiate cycle racer and team captain.

Kelly Myers is an EE undergraduate, and through her Mary Gates Leadership Scholarship Award, she aims to start three babysitting co-ops in the Seattle area. Babysitting co-ops are an alternative for babysitting and consists of families trading points for babysitting. It has no cost and can save parents from searching for a sitter. Essentially, these co-ops are community babysitting programs that use a point system rather than money. Myers' advisor is Katie Winters from the Youth and Family Programs at the Pacific Science Center.
