Brandon Pierquet - A STARS Researcher

UW EE assistant professor Brandon Pierquet has been selected to receive $764,000 from the Washington State STARS Researcher Program. The Strategically Targeted Academic Researchers (STARS) program was created to support new faculty conducting innovative research in Washington State to promote both product innovation and longer-term statewide economic development.

Pierquet joined the UW EE faculty in September 2012. He is the second EE faculty member to receive support from the program in the area of smart grid research. Professor Daniel Kirschen was a STARS recipient in 2011.

“The hiring of Brandon adds significant strength to the department, college, and university’s growing leadership position in the multidisciplinary and strategic area of sustainable energy,” says professor and chair, Vikram Jandhyala. “The STARS recognition for Brandon is another early and deserved confirmation of his high quality.”

Dr. Pierquet received his Ph.D. and S.M. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2011 and 2006 respectively, and his B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2004, all in electrical engineering. After graduating from M.I.T. he worked for Enphase Energy as a senior design engineer, developing grid-tied power converters for distributed solar applications.

His research focuses on the design of electronic systems, with particular interest in power electronics and their control. This includes applications in smart-grids, photovoltaic systems, and electric vehicles.
