Jessica Tran Receives American Sign Language Project Scholarship

EE graduate student Jessica J. Tran has won an American Sign Language Project scholarship for her dissertation research titled, "Human-Centered Optimization of Mobile Sign Language Video Communication." She is advised by Professor Eve A. Riskin (EE), Professor Richard E. Ladner, and Associate Professor Jacob O. Wobbrock (iSchool).

Jessica's research contributes to an ongoing research project called MobileASL that aims to make mobile video communication accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing people. Applying video compression algorithms reduces bandwidth consumption; however, intelligibility may be sacrificed. The goal is to determine how much video quality can be reduced before intelligibility is sacrificed when transmitting real-time ASL video at lower frame rates and bitrates.
