Radha Poovendran Appointed
New
Electrical Engineering Department Chair

I am pleased to announce Radha Poovendran as the new chair for Electrical Engineering. As is often the case, this was a difficult decision given the number of qualified candidates and the breadth of the input I received. I am very confident that Radha’s leadership will position and move the department toward even greater success in the years ahead.
Electrical Engineering is fortunate to have had a number of qualified faculty members who were willing to take on this role and clearly care very much about the future of the department. Many thanks to each candidate who stepped forward, and to all who shared opinions with the committee and me during the selection process.
Radha has proven himself in teaching, research, student mentoring and placement, and in leading the recent faculty search processes in the department. He is the founding director of the Network Security Lab (NSL) and a founding member and the associate director of research of the UW Center for Excellence in Information Assurance Research and Education. Radha’s research interests are in the areas of wireless and sensor network security, adversarial modeling, privacy and anonymity in public wireless networks, and cyber-physical systems security.
Additionally, Radha is a recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) for his research contributions to multi-user wireless security. He is also a recipient of the Outstanding Teaching Award and Outstanding Research Advisor Award from UW EE, Graduate Mentor Award from Office of the Chancellor at University of California San Diego. He was selected as an IEEE Fellow for his contributions to security in cyber-physical systems.
He is currently an editor of ACM Transactions on Sensor Networks. Radha is a co-guest editor for special issues on security and privacy in IEEE Networks 2013, and IEEE Journal of Special Topics in Signal Processing 2015.
I appreciate the time and effort dedicated to the search process by chair François Baneyx and members Rico Malvar (Microsoft Research), Tina Montgomery (EE), Brian Curless (CSE), Scott Hauck (EE), Steve Kramer (CEE) Eve Riskin (EE), and Josh Smith (CSE & EE).
