Three UW EE Students Receive 2014 NSF Graduate Research Fellowships
Three UW EE students have been named winners of the 2014 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Award:
- BSEE student Palma London
- PhD student Edward Wang
- PhD student Sunny Rao
These prestigious awards from the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) provide three years of support including an annual stipend, cost-of-education allowance, an international travel allowance, and TeraGrid supercomputer access. Palma London is a BSEE student in the department. She conducts research with Professor Maryam Fazel, as well as Professor Daniela Witten (Biostatistics) and Professor Su-In Lee (CSE and Genome Sciences). In 2013, she was a recipient of the Mary Gates Undergraduate Research Scholarship. Palma’s research focus is optimization and machine learning. She will start her PhD studies at Caltech this fall.
Edward Wang is an EE PhD student collaborating with UW EE/CSE Associate Professor Shwetak Patel. His research takes a broad look at introducing novel sensing techniques that leverage the computing and sensing power of existing devices. As an NSF fellow, he aims to convert the smartphone into a medical device capable of performing preventive health screening for tuberculosis in low resource regions.
Sunny Rao, also an EE PhD student, conducts synthetic biology research under advisement of Eric Klavins and Georg Seelig. She is interested in DNA nanotechnology and is working with the Center for Game Science on a DNA strand displacement video game. Additionally, Sunny leads a student educational outreach group, called Science Explorers, which provides science enrichment at a local elementary school.
