Denise Wilson Receives NSF Grant to Research Student Engagement

Professor Denise Wilson has received an NSF Improving Undergraduate STEM Education (IUSE) grant to research student engagement in the classroom.

As previous research indicates there is no one formula that instructors can use to engage all types of students in all types of classes, the research intends to uncover small changes that faculty can incorporate into their existing teaching style and course structure.

The research will focus on the first three courses in Electrical Engineering and the first three courses in Civil & Environmental Engineering to look closely at what types of faculty interactions make a difference for various types of students.

“The bottom line is that we think all undergraduate students are different and what works with one isn’t necessarily going to appeal to the next,” Wilson said.

Wilson is working in collaboration with Diane Jones, Professor Emeritus in the UW College of Education.
