Karl Bohringer Receives Global Innovation Fund Award

EE Professor Karl Bohringer, who directs the UW Washington Nanofabrication Facility, has received a Global Innovation Fund Award, which will support the formation of a new International Nanotechnology Exchange program. Administered by the UW Office of Global Affairs, the Global Innovation Fund Awards support the development of collaborative research and educational partnerships with institutions of higher education and other partners.

The International Nanotechnology Exchange program will add an international component to the recently funded NSF National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure (NNCI) site at UW. In September 2015, UW was one of 16 sites selected for a new center to lead efforts in nanoscale science for the entire Pacific Northwest. Bohringer serves as site director for the NNCI.

As part of the new exchange program, teams of researchers will visit institutions in France, Japan and Thailand, to facilitate collaborative research. The proposal builds on long-standing professional ties with the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), the premier governmental research organization in France; the Institute for Industrial Science at the University of Tokyo, Japan; and Bangkok Innovation House, a startup incubator in Thailand that was founded by a UW engineering alumna.

“This grant will help build international connections that will be complementary to the NNCI program,” Bohringer said. “In particular, I want to create closer ties to France, Japan and Thailand.”
