Graduate Student Receives SPIE Scholarship

Ph.D. student Utku Baran has received a prestigious Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, for his contributions to the field.

“I was delighted to receive this award,” Baran said. “It is a great honor in the optics society.”

The $3,000 scholarship will be used for education expenses. A third-year Ph.D. student, Baran’s research focus is developing a functional Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) for in vivo application in dermatology and neuroscience. OCT is an emerging non-invasive medical imaging modality in which the coherent interference of a wide spectrum light source is used to create a high-resolution (micron-scale) 3D image of tissue microstructure and microvasculature. The ability to visualize tissue blood flow at the capillary level without using contrast agents is important in a variety of clinical cases. Baran’s research is particularly focused on engineering this technology for dermatology and neuroscience applications. Baran was also awarded with a SPIE-Newport Research Excellence Travel Award this year.

Congratulations, Utku!
